Some of our customers successfully run Newsbin on Linux boxes and the new Intel-based Macs. Here are some resources to help you run Newsbin on these Operating Systems. If you have a personal experience running on Linux or Mac and would like to contribute your knowledge, please contact us.

Linux

There are several options for running Newsbin on Linux:

  1. wine, free with every distro of Linux.
  2. Crossover, which is a corporate sponsor of the wine folks, who offer a slightly more enhanced wine experience for relatively low cost.
  3. VMWare, is a fully-featured virtual machine that lets you run multiple OS's literally in windows on your desktop. It's pretty expensive but, you get what you pay for.

We also have a Newsbin Linux Forum dedicated to Linux users.

Mac

Now that Mac has an Intel architecture, there are more options available for running Windows on the Mac.

  1. WinOnX is available in the Mac App Store for $5. It was reported in this thread on the Newsbin Forums.
  2. Parallels runs only on Intel based Macs but should run Newsbin fine. We have not tested it ourselves. It is $80 for the Mac version at the time of this writing and comes with a 15 day free trial.
  3. OpenOSX has product that runs on both PowerPC and Intel based macs. The PPC version suggests you run Windows 98 so, that limits you to running Newsbin version 4.22. If you have an Intel based Mac, you can install Windows and run the latest version of Newsbin
  4. VMWare Fusion, which is a fully-featured virtual machine that lets you run multiple OS's literally in windows on your desktop under MacOS.
  5. CrossOver, lets you run many windows applications on a Mac, including Newsbin. Has a free trial. Original forum post from a user reporting this works with Newsbin is here
